The Prison organization is headed by an Officer of the rank of Director General of Police. He controls the overall functioning of the Department and defines objectives for functioning of 02 Central Jails, 10 District Jails, 01 Special Jail & 01 Sub Jail, besides upcoming Institute of Correctional Services (ICS) at Mishriwalla, Jammu. He exercises all functional, administrative and financial powers of the Department.
Deputy Inspector General of Prisons
The Director General of Prisons is assisted by a Deputy Inspector General of Prisons at the Headquarters in proper and effective superintendence and management of Jails including inspections, running of reformation centres and holding of cultural events etc in various Jails. The DIG Prisons exercises direct supervision over detention section. Besides, Prison Directorate has a Chief Accounts Officer who heads the Account Branch, Technical Officer as head of Engineering wing and Staff Officer who is entrusted with supervisory control over Establishment Section & Personal Section.
Superintendent Jail
He is the administrative and functional head of the Jail. He is entirely responsible for overall control and supervision of Jail, maintains order and discipline amongst the prisoners confined and also the subordinate staff employed therein. He controls all expenditure related to the Jail and is responsible for safety and security of prisoners lodged therein. Superintendent Jail performs duties strictly as per the provisions of Jail Manual and as per the directions of Director General of Prisons issued from time to time.
